Immigration and relocation are connected

A family considering a long-term future in Singapore needs more than an application checklist. Immigration eligibility, employment, children’s education, housing, family timing and community integration should be considered together.

Start with the official eligibility route

ICA publishes separate permanent residence routes for categories including certain family members of Singapore citizens or permanent residents, Employment Pass and S Pass holders, qualifying students and foreign investors. Singapore citizenship has its own eligibility routes and generally requires permanent residence first. Meeting a published route makes a person eligible to apply; it does not guarantee approval.

Prepare accurate, complete records

• Identity, civil-status and family documents.
• Education and professional qualifications.
• Employment, business, income and tax records where applicable.
• Residence history and family information.
• Certified copies and acceptable English translations where required.

Every applicant must review and declare the information submitted through the official ICA process. ICA alone determines the outcome.

Understand National Service implications

National Service obligations can apply to male Singapore citizens and permanent residents, including certain applicants granted status as students or under parental sponsorship. Families should read the current ICA and Central Manpower Base guidance before making a decision.

Plan children’s education early

School choices depend on age, curriculum, language, timing and availability. International students seeking entry to mainstream primary or secondary schools may need to use the AEIS or S-AEIS process, while Primary 1 has a separate international-student route. International and private schools have their own calendars and admissions policies.

Organise housing and daily life

Create a housing brief around school, work, commuting, budget and lease duration. Use a property agent registered with the Council for Estate Agencies when professional agency work is required, verify the property and landlord, and review the tenancy terms before signing. Healthcare, insurance, banking, utilities and suitable community or club introductions can then be sequenced around the move.
