A Dependant’s Pass renewal can start up to six months before expiry, remains tied to the main pass and needs current passport details before issuance.
A Dependant’s Pass renewal for the family member of an Employment Pass or S Pass holder can generally be submitted up to six months before expiry and must be submitted before the pass expires. The renewed duration is tied to the main work pass or the requested duration, whichever is shorter.
Renew the main pass first where timing allows, check every family member’s passport and submit early. A timely application does not by itself extend lawful stay after the current pass expires, so monitor the outcome and use MOM’s extension route only when its conditions apply.
Map the main pass and every dependant
Create one family table with the main pass type and expiry, each dependant’s pass expiry, passport number, passport expiry and travel plans. Include any Letter of Consent or Work Permit linked to the dependant.
For this reason, MOM’s renewal page says employers can generally apply up to 180 days before expiry. Dependants of Employment Pass Sponsorship and EntrePass holders use a three-month window and a different submission route.
Do not assume all family members share one expiry date. Each pass has its own record and application. Check the eligibility criteria in force at renewal because approval is not guaranteed.
Renew the main pass in the right order
The dependant’s validity is tied to the main work pass. If the dependant is renewed before the main pass, the granted duration may be limited by the main pass’s current expiry. Coordinate the applications so the intended main-pass period is available for the dependant decision.
In practice, Write the application owner, earliest filing date and target submission date beside each person. Allow for MOM’s published processing time, document requests and travel. Renewing early does not remove the unused days from the current DP because the renewed duration starts when the current pass expires.
If the family has an urgent trip, check passport validity, entry requirements and whether the current pass remains valid for return. Do not cancel a pass or surrender a card merely because a renewal has been submitted.
Update passport details before relying on them
MOM’s change-notification page says the sponsoring company or main pass holder can update the passport number and expiry date instantly through EP eService. Written requests for these two changes are no longer accepted.
At the same time, check that the passport copy is clear and that the name, date of birth, number and expiry match the application. If a new passport is expected soon, plan whether to update it before renewal or while the renewal is being processed.
Keep the update acknowledgement with the family record. MOM notes that automated checkpoint use may take four working days after a passport update, so avoid assuming an immediate system change for travel.
Use a continuity table
| Date or record | Why it matters | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Main pass expiry | Limits the dependant’s renewed duration | Coordinate the main renewal first where appropriate |
| DP expiry | Application must be filed before this date | Set an earlier internal deadline |
| Passport expiry | Details must remain current for issuance and travel | Renew and update MOM when necessary |
| Renewal outcome | Controls the next issuance action | Read the IPA and complete issuance on time |
| Current stay permission | Prevents overstay while an outcome is pending | Monitor validity and use the proper extension request if eligible |
Review the table weekly once any expiry is within two months. Share only the information needed by the employer, employment agent and family member.
Do not confuse an application with extended stay
As a result, if the current pass is close to expiry and the renewal outcome is pending, check lawful stay immediately. MOM’s stay-extension guidance includes a pending EP, S Pass, DP or LTVP renewal where the current pass expires in two weeks.
The same route also covers specified situations such as waiting for a new passport, with supporting evidence from the embassy or delivery provider. Submit the request through the stated MOM channel and retain the response.
Do not overstay while waiting for an outcome. If MOM grants a Special Pass or other stay document, record its exact expiry and conditions. Travel plans may need to change.
Complete issuance by the earlier deadline
For example, if renewal is approved, read the IPA. MOM states that an IPA for a dependant of an Employment Pass holder is generally valid for three months, while one for a dependant of an S Pass holder is generally valid for two months.
The pass must be issued before the IPA or current pass expires, whichever occurs first. Prepare the passport details, Singapore contact information, address and any requested declarations. Pay the applicable issuance and visa fees through the official service.
After issuance, check whether the notification letter says to keep the existing card or expect a new one. Do not return a card that MOM says should remain with the holder. Set up the digital pass in SGWorkPass where required.
Check linked work and family arrangements
In addition, a dependant’s work permission may have its own validity and renewal requirements. Confirm any Letter of Consent or Work Permit separately. A DP renewal does not automatically prove that linked work authority has been renewed.
Update schools, insurers or other organisations only where necessary and with the minimum personal information. Keep passport and pass images out of ordinary email folders after the operational need ends.
The moving with children guide remains the pillar cornerstone. The DP documents guide covers the first application, while the IPA and card guide explains initial issuance. The Singapore Immigration and Relocation hub connects related guidance.
For this reason, the family should finish with four confirmed items for each dependant: a valid passport record, a timely renewal application, lawful stay through the outcome and completed issuance by the earlier deadline.
