Foreign spouse stay planning keeps the current visit pass, LTVP processing, travel, work limits and extension dates separate while ICA decides.
Foreign spouse stay planning should start from the pass that is valid today, not from the pending Long-Term Visit Pass application. Marriage, a submitted application, a positive Pre-Marriage Long-Term Visit Pass Assessment and an in-principle approval do not by themselves extend a Short-Term Visit Pass.
Keep a dated calendar for lawful stay, application status, travel, work restrictions and any extension request. Prepare a departure plan in case ICA does not grant more time before the current pass expires.
Identify the current immigration permission
Record the passport, entry date, electronic visit pass, expiry date and any visa details. The period of stay is controlled by the visit pass issued on entry, not by the visa’s validity.
Confirm whether the spouse holds an ICA Short-Term Visit Pass or a pass issued by MOM after cancellation of another pass. The responsible authority and extension route can differ.
Use the official validity tools and save the result without storing account credentials. Recheck after travel because a new entry can produce a different period of stay.
Keep the LTVP application separate
Record the sponsor, application reference, submission date, route and current status. A complete application should contain accurate identity, marriage, sponsor and household information with accepted translations where needed.
The ICA PMLA page states that a positive assessment is not an LTVP and does not itself approve long-term stay. The foreign spouse must apply separately after marriage.
Do not describe a pending application as permission to remain. Keep the existing pass expiry visible on every planning page.
Use official processing times carefully
The ICA service commitment states that an LTVP application for the spouse of a Singapore citizen is generally processed within six weeks where PMLA was submitted, and may take up to six months where it was not. Some applications take longer.
These are service estimates, not guaranteed decision dates. Build the stay plan around the current pass and realistic contingencies rather than the earliest expected outcome.
Check application status through MyICA or the official e-service. Avoid duplicate applications or informal appeals while the application remains pending.
Diary the visit-pass decision date
The ICA visit-pass extension guide states that an online extension application may be submitted when 14 days or less remain on an ICA-issued Short-Term Visit Pass. ICA assesses each request on its facts, and the extension period is subject to its decision.
Record the earliest eligible application date, current expiry, expected extension processing time and a safe departure date. Keep passport and SG Arrival Card details ready.
Where a local sponsor is required, confirm the sponsor’s eligibility and availability before the window opens.
Do not treat an extension as automatic
Submit a truthful reason and supporting documents through the official service. A pending LTVP may be relevant context, but it does not guarantee an extension.
ICA advises visitors to depart on or before the existing pass expires. Do not wait for the last day to prepare travel or assume that an application permits overstay.
If the pass was issued by MOM, follow the authority’s route stated in the ICA guidance rather than submitting under the wrong service.
Keep work and stay permission separate
ICA states that a visitor on a Short-Term Visit Pass must not engage in paid or unpaid employment, business, a profession or an occupation unless a valid work pass or eligible work-pass-exempt activity applies.
A pending LTVP does not authorise work. A spouse should not begin employment, help in a family business or deliver services because the application is expected to succeed.
If work is planned, check the proper MOM route and start conditions separately. Keep the employer’s record outside the personal stay calendar.
Plan travel and re-entry conservatively
Travel can affect the practical stay plan. Check passport validity, visa requirements and the current application instructions before departure. Entry remains subject to immigration control at the checkpoint.
Do not assume that leaving and returning will create a particular new stay period. Keep onward travel and funds available as required for a visitor.
Update ICA where the application route requires notice of changed passport, address, marital, employment or household information.

Prepare for approval without relying on it
If ICA issues an in-principle approval, follow the stated formalities, medical, document and payment instructions. An in-principle approval is not itself an immigration pass and does not confer valid stay.
Keep the current visit pass valid until the LTVP is actually issued or the spouse departs. Record the digital LTVP issuance date and verify the pass after completion.
If the application is refused, use the official appeal route only when eligible and with relevant new information. A pending case is not ready for appeal.
Keep one shared chronology
The Singapore citizen sponsor and foreign spouse should maintain one calendar of submissions, status checks, pass expiries, extension dates and travel. Assign who checks each item and keep contact details current.
